Detailed Information
Denver & Rio Grande Western
During the World War II industrial production was overseen and regulated by the Federal War Production Board. When the UP placed their 2nd Challenger order with Alco in 1943 the WPB stepped in and had 5 of the locomotives built for the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR to help fulfill their need for additional motive power to haul wartime traffic. These 5 locomotives were built to UPs specifications.

Rapido Trains Inc. is pleased to bring speed to the rails with the Amtrak Rohr Turboliner in N Scale!
In the early days of Amtrak, efforts were made to improve passenger services along key corridors. Following the success of the French-built RTG Turboliners in the mid-1970s in the Midwest, Amtrak turned to Rohr Industries in California to build modernized Turboliners for use along the Empire Corridor.
Entering service starting in September 1976, these new RTL Turboliners quickly proved their value, bringing passengers back to the rails. Equipped with third-rail shoes, they operated on electric power through New Yorks Grand Central Terminal (and later Penn Station), switching to gas-turbine power once out of New York City. Painted in Amtraks stunning red, white and blue Phase III paint scheme, they operated on most Empire Corridor services, as well as regular appearances on the Adirondack to and from Montreal in the early years. Occasional equipment needs even put the Turbos on other rare adventures outside their normal call of duty, including the Niagara Rainbow to Detroit via Southwestern Ontario, and the Maple Leaf to Toronto via Niagara Falls.
After nearly 20 years of service under their belts, Amtrak selected one RTL set in 1994 to be rebuilt into what would be called the RTL-II, incorporating several improvements including new turbines, a remodelled interior, a striking new demonstrator paint scheme, in addition to extending the lifespan of the set for several more years. While this set continued in service until 2003, no other RTL-II sets were ever commissioned.
Further redevelopments and improvements of the fleet into the RTL-IIIs was never fully realized, and all were retired from active service in 2004. Conventional equipment has since been utilized on the Empire Corridor services in place of the once mighty Turboliners.

This detailed Atlas Master Silver N Scale Alco RS2 diesel is a replica of the American Locomotive Companys versatile four-axle rod switcher introduced in late 1946. The successor to the popular RS1, the RS2 featured a rounded carbody, a cabside fuel filler cap and many upgrades. The most notable feature was its new 244 prime mover, which increased the horsepower to 1,500, a 500hp upgrade over the RS1. With the added horsepower, the RS2 was received well by railroads and just over 370 were constructed for the U.S. and Canada. They were used on general merchandise freight, coal trains coming back from the tipple and some were used in passenger service. This N Scale Alco RS2 features a slow-speed motor with dual flywheels, low-friction mechanism, directional golden-white LED lighting, a light board thats easily changed replaced with DCC decoder when you are ready, accurate decoration and AccuMate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers.

In the early days of Amtrak, efforts were made to improve passenger services along key corridors. Following the success of the French-built RTG Turboliners in the mid-1970s in the Midwest, Amtrak turned to Rohr Industries in California to build modernized Turboliners for use along the Empire Corridor.
Entering service starting in September 1976, these new RTL Turboliners quickly proved their value, bringing passengers back to the rails. Equipped with third-rail shoes, they operated on electric power through New Yorks Grand Central Terminal (and later Penn Station), switching to gas-turbine power once out of New York City. Painted in Amtraks stunning red, white and blue Phase III paint scheme, they operated on most Empire Corridor services, as well as regular appearances on the Adirondack to and from Montreal in the early years. Occasional equipment needs even put the Turbos on other rare adventures outside their normal call of duty, including the Niagara Rainbow to Detroit via Southwestern Ontario, and the Maple Leaf to Toronto via Niagara Falls.
After nearly 20 years of service under their belts, Amtrak selected one RTL set in 1994 to be rebuilt into what would be called the RTL-II, incorporating several improvements including new turbines, a remodelled interior, a striking new demonstrator paint scheme, in addition to extending the lifespan of the set for several more years. While this set continued in service until 2003, no other RTL-II sets were ever commissioned.
Further redevelopments and improvements of the fleet into the RTL-IIIs was never fully realized, and all were retired from active service in 2004. Conventional equipment has since been utilized on the Empire Corridor services in place of the once mighty Turboliners.

N 4-6-6-4 Steam Challenger - DCC & Sound - Union Pacific (Modern) #3985
In the spring of 1941 UP locomotive designers began working on a locomotive to team up with the new 4-8-8-4 Big Boys then under construction at Alco. The Big Boys were designed to pull heavy freights up the Wasatch Range in Utah to the division point at Green River, WY. What was needed was a locomotive to take over at that point that could speed the freights eastward across the Wyoming Division. Building on their experience with the original CSA 4-6-6-4 Challengers UP and Alcos designers developed a newer and better Challenger type locomotive. The result was a group of 65 4-6-6-4 Challenger built in three separate groups during World War II.

After nearly 20 years of service under their belts, Amtrak selected one RTL set in 1994 to be rebuilt into what would be called the RTL-II, incorporating several improvements including new turbines, a remodelled interior, a striking new demonstrator paint scheme, in addition to extending the lifespan of the set for several more years. While this set continued in service until 2003, no other RTL-II sets were ever commissioned.
Further redevelopments and improvements of the fleet into the RTL-IIIs was never fully realized, and all were retired from active service in 2004. Conventional equipment has since been utilized on the Empire Corridor services in place of the once mighty Turboliners.

In the early days of Amtrak, efforts were made to improve passenger services along key corridors. Following the success of the French-built RTG Turboliners in the mid-1970s in the Midwest, Amtrak turned to Rohr Industries in California to build modernized Turboliners for use along the Empire Corridor.
Entering service starting in September 1976, these new RTL Turboliners quickly proved their value, bringing passengers back to the rails. Equipped with third-rail shoes, they operated on electric power through New Yorks Grand Central Terminal (and later Penn Station), switching to gas-turbine power once out of New York City. Painted in Amtraks stunning red, white and blue Phase III paint scheme, they operated on most Empire Corridor services, as well as regular appearances on the Adirondack to and from Montreal in the early years. Occasional equipment needs even put the Turbos on other rare adventures outside their normal call of duty, including the Niagara Rainbow to Detroit via Southwestern Ontario, and the Maple Leaf to Toronto via Niagara Falls.
After nearly 20 years of service under their belts, Amtrak selected one RTL set in 1994 to be rebuilt into what would be called the RTL-II, incorporating several improvements including new turbines, a remodelled interior, a striking new demonstrator paint scheme, in addition to extending the lifespan of the set for several more years. While this set continued in service until 2003, no other RTL-II sets were ever commissioned.
Further redevelopments and improvements of the fleet into the RTL-IIIs was never fully realized, and all were retired from active service in 2004. Conventional equipment has since been utilized on the Empire Corridor services in place of the once mighty Turboliners.

In the spring of 1941 UP locomotive designers began working on a locomotive to team up with the new 4-8-8-4 Big Boys then under construction at Alco. The Big Boys were designed to pull heavy freights up the Wasatch Range in Utah to the division point at Green River, WY. What was needed was a locomotive to take over at that point that could speed the freights eastward across the Wyoming Division. Building on their experience with the original CSA 4-6-6-4 Challengers UP and Alcos designers developed a newer and better Challenger type locomotive. The result was a group of 65 4-6-6-4 Challenger built in three separate groups during World War II.

This detailed Atlas Master Silver N Scale Alco RS2 diesel is a replica of the American Locomotive Companys versatile four-axle rod switcher introduced in late 1946. The successor to the popular RS1, the RS2 featured a rounded carbody, a cabside fuel filler cap and many upgrades. The most notable feature was its new 244 prime mover, which increased the horsepower to 1,500, a 500hp upgrade over the RS1. With the added horsepower, the RS2 was received well by railroads and just over 370 were constructed for the U.S. and Canada. In the early days of Amtrak, efforts were made to improve passenger services along key corridors. Following the success of the French-built RTG Turboliners in the mid-1970s in the Midwest, Amtrak turned to Rohr Industries in California to build modernized Turboliners for use along the Empire Corridor.
Entering service starting in September 1976, these new RTL Turboliners quickly proved their value, bringing passengers back to the rails. Equipped with third-rail shoes, they operated on electric power through New Yorks Grand Central Terminal (and later Penn Station), switching to gas-turbine power once out of New York City. Painted in Amtraks stunning red, white and blue Phase III paint scheme, they operated on most Empire Corridor services, as well as regular appearances on the Adirondack to and from Montreal in the early years. Occasional equipment needs even put the Turbos on other rare adventures outside their normal call of duty, including the Niagara Rainbow to Detroit via Southwestern Ontario, and the Maple Leaf to Toronto via Niagara Falls.
After nearly 20 years of service under their belts, Amtrak selected one RTL set in 1994 to be rebuilt into what would be called the RTL-II, incorporating several improvements including new turbines, a remodelled interior, a striking new demonstrator paint scheme, in addition to extending the lifespan of the set for several more years. While this set continued in service until 2003, no other RTL-II sets were ever commissioned.
Further redevelopments and improvements of the fleet into the RTL-IIIs was never fully realized, and all were retired from active service in 2004. Conventional equipment has since been utilized on the Empire Corridor services in place of the once mighty Turboliners.

This detailed Atlas Master Silver N Scale Alco RS2 diesel is a replica of the American Locomotive Companys versatile four-axle rod switcher introduced in late 1946. The successor to the popular RS1, the RS2 featured a rounded carbody, a cabside fuel filler cap and many upgrades. The most notable feature was its new 244 prime mover, which increased the horsepower to 1,500, a 500hp upgrade over the RS1. With the added horsepower, the RS2 was received well by railroads and just over 370 were constructed for the U.S. and Canada. They were used on general merchandise freight, coal trains coming back from the tipple and some were used in passenger service. This N Scale Alco RS2 features a slow-speed motor with dual flywheels, low-friction mechanism, directional golden-white LED lighting, a light board thats easily changed replaced with DCC decoder when you are ready, accurate decoration and AccuMate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers.
