Back in the day the Railway Express Agency (REA) was how America shipped packages. The Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale REA Transfer Building is based on a typical rail-to-truck transfer facility.

For many Americans, first came the big decision of what to buy from the mail-order catalog. Then there was the trip down to the depot to drop your letter into the slot on the side of the Railway Post Office. A few weeks later, youd get a message that your package had arrived via Railway Express at the depot, or if you lived in a bigger city, it would come right to your door in a big green truck. From tiny hamlets to bustling cities, nothing would brighten your day faster than to receive a package from the REA.

High priority packages were moved in baggage cars on most major trains, and REA also operated its own fleets of specialized cars. Handling and processing millions of items each day required extensive facilities. To speed priority shipments, REA built its own transfer buildings alongside the coach yards of most major terminals to permit faster movement of packages between road and rail. Baggage-Express cars from the railroads and REAs own cars were spotted here for loading and unloading. The other side of the building provided loading-unloading docks for the REA fleet of green delivery trucks, as well as those from larger customers without direct rail service and private trucking companies. Adding the excitement of these important facilities to your railroad is easy with this kit. Designed as a modular building, additional kits (each sold separately) can be combined to build a larger or customized building for your layout. Its brick construction and large windows fit any era from the 1900s to the present, and decals for various eras are included for the finishing touch. The Walthers Cornerstone Mission-Style Freight House is based on a standard Santa Fe design used across the railroad. From passenger train names to stations, the Santa Fe led the pack in selling the American southwest as a vacation destination. To carry the flavor of the old west, many stations and their attached or adjacent freight station (including brick ones) were reworked with pinkish-tan stucco walls, tile roofs and mission-style trim to resemble traditional adobe buildings. While the depot was a Santa Fe design, similarly styled depots and freight houses were used on several railroads. This easy-to-build kit includes the realistic stucco structure, window glazing, wood trim, a brick platform and realistic printed signs. The Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Coal Flood Loader kit is based on a hopper car loading structure in use since the 1970s. The energy crunch of the early 70s and the move toward improved air quality left coal-fired power plants and other industries in need of clean-burning, low sulfur coal. Vast deposits were available in the western US, but getting coal to customers was a big logistical problem. Several ideas were suggested, but in the end, railroads became the primary means of transport. Coal soon represented a considerable part of the traffic on many lines. As a cost-cutting measure, some large power companies adopted the just in time approach to buying coal. This means trains had to deliver on time, as only a small stockpile was maintained, and in essence, the unit trains became a rolling conveyor belt. In order to meet these tough schedules, a new generation of cars and motive power were introduced, and the methods of loading coal on the trains also changed. The Flood Loader is served by a network of conveyors, these large buildings are essentially storage bins, which load entire trains on the move. After coal has been washed, crushed to size and graded, its delivered from these facilities to the flood loader, which can be quite some distance away, via conveyor belt. In operation, a unit train enters the loader at walking speed, about 4 mph. Loading begins when the first car rolls under the chute, a job handled by detectors and computers. In a matter of minutes the car is filled to capacity and loading begins on the next. Some loaders also use their computers to briefly stop the flow between cars, producing a down hill slope to the load. Others run continuously, and a wheel loader is used to reclaim the spilled coal. As the last car clears, the loader stops automatically and begins refilling for the next train. Now fully loaded, the unit train passes over a weigh-in-motion scale, to verify the actual amount of coal being shipped to the customer. Seen in both eastern and western coalfields, the Coal Flood Loader is a great way to add variety to coal operations on your line. Since the actual mine and processing operations are often miles away, this flood loader and conveyor can be placed trackside to imply the presence of a bigger mine located off your layout.

The Walthers Cornerstone Icehouse and Icing Platform brings back the heady days of railroading when fast freights forwarded meat and produce to market in ice-cooled reefers. From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their perishable loads riding in long strings of refrigerator cars. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could be serviced and on the move in minutes. This complete kit includes a detailed icehouse, based on a prototype in Antigo, Wisconsin, plus a modular icing platform, from a Pacific Fruit Express design. Lots of add-on details, including an optional platform roof (used in warm areas to shade ice and slow melting), roof vents and 24 ice blocks are included. The Walthers Cornerstone Brick Freight Office is where businesses and small industries that didnt have their own sidings arranged for rail service. Many off-line shippers relied on the railroad to move their goods from trains to trucks for delivery to stores and warehouses. The freight office served as the -brains- of the operation, housing an army of clerks who kept track of paperwork and billing. This kit is based on structure that stood on Fowler Street, just south of Milwaukees hometown depot. Its companion Freight House next door handled cargo transfers between boxcars and delivery trucks. Their classic American design is similar to buildings in many other cities making both models ideal for use in any city terminal. On your layout they can also be used as part of a larger industry or in a railroad yard to handle company materials. Authentic Milwaukee Road signs are included in the Freight Office kit, but you can easily add your own signs for other railroads or shippers.
