EMD’s first wide selling passenger diesel, 428 E7 A-units were built between 1945 and 1949, along with an additional 82 E7Bs. The carbody utilized EMD’s bulldog nose made famous on various F-units starting from the FT while carrying over the rectangular side windows seen on earlier E-units.

The E7 became a cornerstone of post-war passenger service and could be found at the head of many railroad’s passenger trains. Replaced by later versions like the E-8 and E-9, many E7s found themselves bumped into lower service including local passenger and even freight service. Several E7s remained in service in New Jersey commuter service past the formation of Conrail. They were scrapped in the early 1980s. Only one E7, former PRR #5901, survives, restored at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
